Animoca Brands Acquires Majority Shares In Life Beyond’s Darewise Entertainment

Darewise Entertainment has sold 70% of its shares to blockchain gaming company Animoca Brands and has partnered with Bored Ape Yacht Club to integrate blockchain and Web3 technology into their game Life Beyond.

Life Beyond, formerly a complex player-driven economy based on a single currency that can be earned in-game or bought with real-world money. Apparently, the game will also feature NFTs, play-to-earn mechanics, and a metaverse world in light of their recent partnerships.

“It has been going for some time, but it’s very exciting that it’s finally happening,” Darewise CEO Benjamin Charbit told VentureBeat. “At the core, what we have been developing since the beginning was a great fit for decentralized technology because we wanted to run a real-money economy. Back in the beginning, we thought that blockchain was maybe too hardcore to and not developed enough. And then we started changing our mind at the end of the first half of 2021.”

Darewise is a Paris-based development studio founded by Ubisoft veterans that have worked on popular AAA games such as Assassin’s Creed Unity, Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag, Black & White, The Division, and the Fable franchise. Charbit himself was a former game director at Ubisoft and founded the studio together with former Crytek tech lead Samuel Kahn. They’ll continue to head the studio following the acquisition.
