Civilization Online To Shut Down On December 7th

XLGames has announced that its RTS/MMORPG hybrid, Civilization Online, is set to shut down on December 7th. The game, which was developed in cooperation with Civilization IP owner 2K, launched in South Korea on December 2nd, 2015, putting at just over a year online at the time of shutdown. It was never released outside of South Korea, but publishers were chosen for both China and Taiwan. It is not known whether the game will still launch in either country, but the lack of news on that front leads me to believe that it will not.

XLGames did not give a reason for the shutdown, but, with how short of a time it was online, it is safe to assume that the game was simply not successful. An attempt to port Civilization's basic gameplay elements to an MMO setting, Civilization Online was a session-based, PvP-focused MMORPG in which each player commanded an army in addition to their own character and one faction could definitively win each session. While attempting to do something different, it seems that this specific formula was not one that resonated with players.
