Sources Reveal Embracer Group Is Selling Gearbox Publishing Amid Ongoing Restructuring

Embracer Group is reportedly selling off Gearbox Publishing in the aftermath of its tanked multi-billion-dollar partnership deal last year. Rumors that the publishing group was for sale began last fall and have recently been corroborated by anonymous sources.

Gearbox co-founder and CEO Randy Pitchford apparently gave his employees three options: stay with Embracer Group, sell to another company, or buy themselves out to operate independently. Multiple sources claim that the group decided to sell and is now in the process of finalizing the deal, the details of which are expected to be shared next month.

Pitchford later issued a statement to Kotaku that neither confirmed nor denied the report. “I’m delighted that what we might be up to is interesting enough to people that you want to make a story for your readers,” he said. “I’m honored and humbled that our company is a topic of rumor, speculation, and discussion. As always, we will be thrilled to share whenever we have projects to announce or news to share as we work hard towards our mission to entertain the world.”

Embracer acquired Gearbox Entertainment in April 2021 and quickly became one of its biggest subsidiaries when Cryptic Studios ed its publishing umbrella later that year. Cryptic has since been sold off to DECA Games and there are also rumors that Embracer is also selling Saber Interactive to the highest bidder.

Since its cost-cutting and debt-reduction efforts.
