The Agency Overview
The Agency was an ambitious game that never saw a release, much to the dismay of many of its followers. It promised a heavily action-based experience in both cooperative and competitive environments on both Windows and PS3, offering shooting and stealth combat that plays like a single-player console game, similar to Global Agenda. One of its primary mechanics was the ability to change classes at will, by switching equipment, allowing players to go from an aggressive, high-firepower fighter to a stealthy rogue, which shares similarities with Final Fantasy XIV. It also planned to offer an array of casino-inspired minigames that could be used to open up new missions by attracting the attention of NPCs either through excessive losses or wins. To pair with the game’s release, a Facebook game called The Agency: Covert Ops was released on May 4, 2010 and taken down with The Agency’s cancellation.
The Agency Key Features:
- Two Factions – Flavor your missions by picking a faction: The United Network of Intelligence and Tactical Experts (U.N.I.T.E), the world's most elite secret agents; or The Paramilitary Global Operations Network (ParaGON), one of the largest private armies in the world.
- Equipment Determines Class – Rather than being forced to create a new character when you want to try a new class, equip your stealth armor and assassinate foes at any time.
- PvP and Co-Op Features – up to 32 players in PvP or PvE battles to complete missions and obtain awesome rewards.
- Collectible Operatives – Put NPCs to work and complete missions while you’re offline, supplying the player with a constant source of income, receiving notifications via email as your Operatives finish their missions.

Development History / Background:
The Agency, sometimes subtitled Covert Ops, was developed by SOE Seattle and was intended to be published by Sony Online Entertainment, adding to its large library of online games such as the Planetside and Everquest series of games. The game was announced in 2007, boasting many unique and exciting features that made many gamers anticipate its release. A Facebook game set in the same universe called The Agency: Covert Ops Black Market was released in 2010, as a way to generate hype for the PC/PS3 game. The Facebook game was heavily inspired by the toted gameplay features, offering avatar customization, mini-games, combat, and more. Trailers were released and the game was showcased at events up until 2011, when SOE announced a massive downsizing leading to over 200 employees getting laid off. Its Seattle branch was closed on June 11, 2007, spelling the cancellation of The Agency and giving SOE a more directed approach on its already-popular franchises such as Everquest and PlanetSide.
