Take-Two CEO Reveals Plans For A Standalone GTA Online

Rockstar Games is planning to release a standalone version of Grand Theft Auto Online, due to market saturation as well as the success of last year’s standalone Red Dead Online. During a recent Morgan Stanley conference, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick said that they’ve reached the point where they’re now looking for ways to bring more players into the online game.

Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold over 140 million copies to date and has often made it to NPD Group’s Top 10 Best-Selling Games list.

According to Red Dead Online’s standalone launch, which saw the game’s biggest month in of players, as proof that a standalone release is the way to go. He also sees the move as an opportunity to grow their playerbase and as a way to encourage new players to the full version of the game.

Red Dead Online initially launched with a 75% discount, bringing the price down to $5 for several weeks before returning to its original $20 price tag. Take-Two and Rockstar have yet to announce a release date or pricing for GTA Online but we’ll probably be seeing a similar price offering.
