Blue Byte is a German video game developer and publisher founded in 1988 and is best known for Battle Isle and The Settler. The company operates as a subsidiary of gaming giant Ubisoft.

Blue Byte was founded in 1988 by Thomas Hertzler and Lothar Schmitt in Mülheim, . The company’s first game was titled Great Courts, a Tennis simulation game which was released in 1989, followed by a turn-based strategy game titled Battle Isle in 1991. Their next successful game was The Settlers, a real-time strategy game which focused on building medieval settlements with workers and armies to perform specific tasks. The Settlers has spawned numerous sequels and garnered several awards from game magazines. The company also developed several game titles that were well received in Europe but failed to capture the international market. In 1995, Julian Pretto, a Chicago-based entrepreneur approached the founders of the company to open an office in Chicago, Illinois which solidified their foothold in the North American market. Three years later, they moved from their old offices in Chicago, Illinois to new facilities in Austin, Texas. In January 2001, Ubisoft acquired Blue Byte for an undisclosed amount when the latter failed to reach its projected annual sales by a huge margin. Under Ubisoft, Blue Byte was tasked with focusing on their widely-popular flagship titles Battle Isle and The Settlers. Blue Byte currently focuses on developing online games for different platforms with the promise of delivering high quality and excellent titles to the international gaming community.
